Yes it is true, guys experience several erections throughout the day. It could be from something he seen, a thought or even a hug from an attractive 24 year old virgin.
Strictly speaking on a sexual basis, guys are highly motivated visually. It's just the way we are wired. When we see some one we find attractive, we get aroused! This prepares us for a sexual encounter should one ensue. Some times this can be inconvenient, but like I said, that's just how we are wired. It is, for a lack of a better way to explain it, a reflex response. But as we get older we become more and more able to control it.

If you have told him you are attracted to him then he is thinking about sex, if you're hugging too then various parts of your body will obviously be touching his, do these two things together and he will be aroused.

You need to learn a little bit more about nature.
Yes, it is true that some men have many erections throughout the day (and night) for no apparent reason. Most erections are hormone driven (for younger men). You also need to know that men are by nature visual creatures - we like to 'look' at things that please us. Not that it's bad, but we like to look.
And you are making a bad assumption that God fearing Christian single men are not hormonal or sexual. We (I am single AND Christian) are STILL sexual beings, with sexual urges, sexual desires, sexual wants and sexual wishes. However, because of our faith and belief we choose NOT to act on those feelings until we are married and under the covenant of God. But we will still obtain (for no reason at all) erections at odd times of the day. It is our nature.

Young men are easily aroused. they can get erections by just thinking about a woman, so getting aroused when hugging an attractive woman who has just complimented you is not unusual. It doesn't matter if the guy is religious or not.

It's is almost like a reflex reaction for man to get an erection after someone tells him they are attracted to them. It is an involuntary thing his body does to prepare him to have sex if that is where it is going. I understand that you are saying you don't want to sleep with him, but the body doesn't "hear" that. It just reacts.
