Workmate has terrible BO?!

Question: Workmate has terrible BO.?
I am typing this in work, a horrible smell is in the office, workmate is smelling like a bin full of nappies or something not very pleasant. I don't know if it is his body, breath, clothes , or what it is, the smell and wet patches are showing on his shirt, its only early. I have had a shower b4 work, and smell clean, teeth were brushed after brekkie, how can some people be like this on a monday morning, I take care myself. are there any subtle ways to get him to clean himself, I have sprayed some Lynx bo spray around myself, as my eyes are watering he is really bloody honking. I think he may have crapped himself , ughh it is worse than sweat.. someone help here, what would YOU say.? I feel sorry for him

(this is him and me, he is in grey and red tee shirt, at office xmas party last year the goodlooking guy is me.)

Well, it's not your responsibility to deal with this unless you are a supervisor or manager. So, something I would suggest is to speak to whomever is the manager of your department and explain the situation.

My question, is this the first time this has happened or has this been a continuing issue with this employee.?

At any rate, I wish you the best of luck at resolving the issue.

it's not up to you to deal with this matter. it's a job for human resources. make an appointment to see them and tell them you cannot work with someone whose personal hygiene is so bad.

it is them up to them to resolve the matter.

You should really get the personnel department to deal with this. They have probably learned through their experience and in getting their qualifications how to deal with embarrassing employees.
If you haven't got a personnel department , or anyone else suitable, try leaving him an open letter. No need to be insulting, just say, perhaps he is not aware that his lack of personal freshness is causing a problem for those around him. You could club together with a few colleagues and buy him a gift pack of deodorant, shower gel and soap as a further hint.
Add a note - "a little gift for you, in case the company doesn't pay enough to cover toiletries ..."Health Question & Answer

You can handle this in one of two ways.

1) You can go about it the safe way and have your higher ups talk to him.

OR

2) You can save his feelings and address it in an informal unattacking manner. Be buddy buddy about it. Don't make it into a "thing". In casual conversation, say to him in a joking manner something like "Wew, You been sweating.?" or if he breaths on you "You growing onions in there.?". Then before he has a chance to feel bad about it go right back to the conversation from before without skipping a beat. This will tell him that you are not attacking him and that you are a buddy. It can be very effective and way less embarrassing to him.Health Question & Answer

Have a word with your Human Resources person and let them sort it out, if you feel uncomfortable with telling him yourself. They should be able to talk to him directly about it without referencing you.

Otherwise, IF you are friendly with him generally anyway, keep it light and jokey and say "Phew Jack - did you run into a garbage truck on the way to work.?" or " Cor - were you running late this morning.? You smell!" Not to be said if you do not get on though!!

OR - be frank - stay out of public earshot and tell him in a non-agressive way, that he smells and it is making you uncomfortable. Maybe he has a problem that he can't cope with at the moment - either physically or even that his shower isn't working at the moment. Whatever, you need to do something and there is nothing worse than doing nothing at all. Others have probably noticed as well and it needs to be addressed before this man becomes a laughing stock.
