My husband talks about getting a cane, is he joking?!

Question: My husband talks about getting a cane, is he joking.?
Guys, or girls, need some advice. My husband has mentioned several times over the past few months that he's going to get a cane. He has really bad knee pain/problems (osteoarthritis and in his 20's) and is having surgery eventually, again (but not ready to yet). He's been on pain meds for the past year and had to stop those, so now he takes OTC pain relievers every day.
He hasn't mentioned this in a few months so I thought maybe he wasn't serious, but now he's been mentioning it again recently, when we were at a couple stores on vacation that sold these wooden ones.
So I was just like, 'Is that the one you want.?' He said "yes" then I said, ok get it. Then he was like, 'no'.
Is he trying to get a reaction from me.? What should I do, I'm trying to be supportive. I want him to do whatever is necessary for him to not be in so much pain.
If you were a guy and in his situation what would you do, or how would u want your wife to respond.?
I feel like he is reaching out for help, but his ego is getting in the way, maybe I'm wrong.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
He is young and in pain so feels that a walking cane would support and relieve some of his pain. On the other hand, he doesn't want to feel or look like an older person. A walking cane is not something that a young man in his 20s would be using, so he obviously feels uncomfortable about having one.
Why doesn't he get one and try it in the home and if it does relieve pain perhaps he will go outside with it when he feels the benefits of using the cane.
Hope he is able to have surgery soon and be able to move about more easily; like a young man.
He is so young to have osteoarthritis, which is wear and tear arthritis.

I am 43 and always said to my wife when I get old I want to get a cane when I go for long walks because I like going for long walks. I don't want an old man walking cane but the sort that has a knob on top not the ones with a L or T shapped handle. Get your husband one I am sure he will use it. Health Question & Answer

I used a cane when I had a knee operation several years ago. It is possible to become dependent upon a cane and if it is not fitted properly it can affect the lower back.Health Question & Answer

Him getting a cane just might be slang. He might be unhappy......Health Question & Answer

If he has pain in his knee - I can understand where he might feel a need for a cane. If you've never had severe pain - you have no idea what he's going through. If he steps wrong, or steps up on a curb or climbing steps or stairs, that knee could possibly give way on him at anytime. If he stumbles on uneven pavement or steps on a rock & his foot rolls or turns his ankle - that knee could lock up on him & down he could go. Then, he could end up w/a broken hip! He may feel the need for one - but at the same time doesn't want sympathy or pity from others. So, he's between a rock & a hard place on making a decision.Health Question & Answer
