Is he going to be on a medicine for help him to stop thinking about pain med.?Health Question & Answer

That type of medication is very addicting. A doctor might be able to wean him down by giving him something a little less potent or some other meds to help withdrawal or to sleep. It will take a couple weeks for withdrawal to end (the first week is the worse). But the psychological affects can linger a while and may take some support or counseling. The good news is 5-6 months is a lot better than 5-6 years. But the real danger is that he continues to take it. The longer the addiction goes on, the harder it will be to quit (if he ever quits). My husband also had a herniated disc which he had surgery for. He was able to get off of the pain medications with no problems but has had lots of trouble sleeping since surgery. He has just now started a prescription sleep aid (he is on ambien) and it seems to be helping.
There are other home remedies and wholistic therapies that can help with insomnia, but in my opinion, prescription medications work faster. Health Question & Answer

The sleep problem should only last for a little while as a withdrawal symptom. He should talk to the doctor about the problem. Maybe a non-addictive sleep med like Trazodone would help but make sure he doesn't prescribe any more opiate pain relievers because addiction is a common problem with that long term of use. Health Question & Answer

His body is asking for the medicine and now he is of them he gets other symptoms, like not being able to sleep.
Best is to get a low dosage of a mild sleeping pill from the Dr to overcome this. And of course one that is non addicting as well.
Guess that the problem gets fixed that way.
RadiusHealth Question & Answer

I doubt he's a drug addict as he is off the meds already

his body might take awhile to adjust to not having the medicine, so it will probably take time until he can sleep well. until then he should look into insomnia cures rather than worrying about drug addictions =]Health Question & Answer
