The responsible and sensible thing is to talk about it first. Just ask him what he thinks, or say that you think you are ready and when he is too to talk about it. This is sensible. What I did to my 16 year old boyfriend of less than a year was to show up at his house after he had been on a family vacation for a month with a box of condoms. After making out for a while I told him that I expected him to use them.
