Before you even go near a gym, you should try and take it slow. Watch what you're eating - try and stay healthy. No snacking between meals and no sweet binges.
As well as that, try and go on daily walks for a week. For the second week add some light jogging.
If you're doing really well with all of this, join a gym. But if you're not, you more than likely won't do well at the gym so it would just be a waste of money joining.
Perhaps try and get a friend/family member to join you..you can both support each other.

Just about any exercise will help you reduce. The key is to keep exercising and don't do the same thing everyday. The idea is to build muscle. Muscle will burn more calories.
