Question: If your catholic can you be circumcised.?
because i think i am Health Question & Answer

Answers:
There is nothing in Catholic teaching to prevent a Catholic from being circumcised provided he is not doing it in the expectation that it will provide any spiritual benefit.

All Christ's Apostles were circumcised just like Christ himself. St Paul questioned the need for circumcision for gentile converts, not so much for the operation itself but because it was the 'gateway' to Judaism. In Biblical times the Jews were known as 'The Circumcision' because this was the most obvious of their characteristics and the one piece of the Law that they always kept.

What St Paul was actually questioning was not the physical operation of circumcision but the need for Christians to follow all the other requirements of the old Jewish Law, including Kosher food and attending the Temple for worship. The Apostles, at the first Council of Jerusalem, agreed that it was not necessary to follow all the requirements of the old Law, including physical circumcision. However they did not prohibit it.

In his writings, St Paul appears to be anti-circumcision but again he is using the term as an allegory for the whole package of Jewish Law. He says, rightly, that it is not necessary to slavishly follow the minutiae of the old Law but to always act with a pure heart, open to helping our neighbour and obeying the really fundamental rules of God's own law (as in the 10 Commandments).

When, in the Middle Ages, Moslems overran the Holy Land and the Crusades set out to fight them, circumcision again came to the fore and Catholics were instructed not to circumcise. Once again this was not so much a prohibition on the physical operation but on conversion to Islam or trying to hide the fact one was a Christian. This Papal Bull was eventually withdrawn or at least allowed to be totally ignored. Many good Priests are circumcised and have been throughout the ages, a condition that could not have been allowed to happen if circumcision were prohibited.

Whilst many countries of Europe which were mainly Catholic have never adopted circumcision as a regular thing, other Catholic countries like the Philippines practice it almost universally.

Circumcision now only has a religious connotation to the Jews and Muslims. For all other groups it is seen as a worthwhile medical procedure with long-term benefits in terms of health.Health Question & Answer

Just about all Catholics all over the world aren't circumcised. The USA is the only major country in the world which has habitually mutilated helpless infant males.

In Europe, for centuries they've known that the practice of amputating the foreskin damages the penis and sexual sensitivity.

The Bible states that if you're Christian, you're not supposed to be circumcised--St. Paul, in his letters to the Corinthians and Ephesians.

The practice of male genital mutilation called circumcision is on the decline, in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, it's down to about 10%.

In the US, more than 80% of helpless infant males were victims of male genital mutilation just a decade ago or so, and nowadays it's down to 50% as more people discover that a natural, normal penis with a foreskin feels and functions better than a scarred, mutilated and partial one.

Circumcision is the worst hoax ever perpetrated on the male sex.

I'm restoring my foreskin, and can attest that it's sooo incredibly much better.

A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.Health Question & Answer

Sadly yes, many Catholics in the US, Australia, Canada used to be circumcised. Now it's pretty much just the USA where half of newborns of all faiths are cut. In fact it is prohibited by church dogma.
