It's a Jewish rite of initiation. The distinguishing mark of membership in the chosen nation of Yahweh, the certificate of spiritual descent from Abraham and of the right to share in the benefits of the Covenant he had made with God. Everyone not circumcised was to be cut off from his people as having broken the covenant.

I agree. It IS wrong. Even if it is done in the name of religion. It is essentially child abuse and mutilation. The foreskin is not a birth defect it is a birth right. I have my religion, but I have common sense too. It's a ritualistic barbaric practise and it's about time it was outlawed. Female circumcision isn't tolerated so why is male circumcision considered acceptable.?

I am a religious person myself, but I always maintain my common sense. If a holy book told us to cut off our arm because of some customary belieft, would we do it.? Exactly, so why harm a defenceless baby who is not even old enough to have a say.? I draw the line at ANY religious belief, where body mutilation is customary..

There are no proven health benefits for circumcision . This is about imposing religion on children. Have the respect for your child to make their own decision regarding their faith when they are older.

My point is, there is nothing wrong with circumcision itself; Chris is circumcised. I just feel it should be a child's decision to make when they grow into adults. That's my issue. We do NOT have the right to take that away from them. On no level (all religion aside) is circumcision justified; unless one is having health complications or they grow older and make that choice themselves. What if when the child is older, he does not wish to practise the Jewish faith.? You cannot take away a childs CHOICE and birth RIGHT.

It isn't Jewish RELIGION. It is Jewish TRADITION. There is a significant difference.

I mean no offense to the Jewish faith, my dad is part Jewish. My issue isn't the religion. My issue is the birth right, that we ALL should have.Health Question & Answer

There's so much ridiculous hype around this issue lately... ultimately we all know men who are circumcised and uncircumcised and they are all just fine and well adjusted and enjoy sex. Neither one is dramatically better off while the other is suffering, so please let's not get so excited over the issue.

Jewish males are supposed to get circumcised because the bible says to do it. Not only is it religion in origin, but it has become a cultural ritual for Jews as well. also, as a Jewish male, if everyone else is circumcised and you are not, you might feel different than everyone else, and the women you are with might expect it to look a certain way, etc. So, being circumcised has it's social benefits as well.

Ultimately, there are no dramatic benefits/costs for either side... some with say more pleasure, on the other side they'll say reduced infection rate... and back and forth and back and forth. Really, neither one is dramatically better or worse. Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately that is a part of the Jewish religion, and they and the Moslems have spread male genital mutilation far and wide.

I was a victim of male genital mutilation as a helpless infant, and I'm not Jewish or Moslem. This caused more than the usual loss of sensitivity, and resulted in my being inable to achieve orgasm in normal sex.

A foreskin is a natural and normal part of the penis, and amputating it reduces sexual sensitivity and orgasmic intensity, and reduces the size of the penis.

It is cruel and unnecessary, and should be outlawed.

Female circumcision of minors is illegal in the US, but males don't have equal protection under the law.

This is sexist and unconstitutional, just because a couple of religions practice this abomination doesn't make it right.

I'm restoring my foreskin, and have increased my sexual sensitivity and orgasmic intensity to heights I never thought possible.

In addition, I have a more natural and normal look, instead of a butchered and scarred appearance.\

A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.Health Question & Answer

It's not actually compulsory though a lot of people don't know that and most do it anyway. Check out http://www.jewsagainstcircumcision.org

I agree, it shouldn't be done to babies, because they are not really part of that religion by choice, they are just a child to Jewish parents or a Jewish mother. Many guys have posted here that they wish they hadn't been circumcised, including some Jews, and they are doing foreskin restoration.

I think permanent body modification like circumcision, which has no health benefits, shouldn't be allowed to be done to children for their parents' beliefs. Parents aren't allowed to tattoo their children or remove earlobes for religious beliefs, this isn't any different. And the argument that it's easier to do on a baby is stupid - there's a higher risk of death and loss of the penis, and adults do elect to be circumcised for their religion so it's not true that none of them would choose it voluntarily.

Not having completely read all the Bible I can't quote chapter and verse at you but, I do remember reading in the Old Testament that God and the Jews formed one of their many covenants and as a sign of having been the 'Chosen People' God insisted they slice off the foreskin and do it to all their children through the generations. It was a way they could remember their covenant with God.
It's sort of become a Christian thing to do it. There are some medical reasons for some to have it done which I won't go into here.
I'm not sure if Jesus insisted we continue the ritual and I'm not sure if even He was circumcised. I imagine He was as it was the sign of being with God in those days.
There are many tribes around the world which circumcise a boy when he is undergoing his ritual of passing into adulthood - around 12-14 years. Most seem to do it without any anaesthetic agents. Now that's got to make your eyes water. Health Question & Answer

Jack, lots of Jews don't have to get circumcised. They are called girls. If you were at a "bris" when a little Jewish guy gets circumcised, I don't think you would find it cruel. The religious person who performs this ritual is called a mohel. He has been trained to perform this simple procedure very quickly and accurately. If you were a medical student as I once was, I believe you would notice that the mohel does his job very quickly and skilfully compared with lots of doctors. In fact , a parent can request that a mohel be found who uses local anaesthetic to prevent pain.
There is a well-known Canadian doctor who performs this rite with EMLA cream used initially for several minutes so that the needle prick is not felt. After the freezing is injected, he waits several minutes, applies a Mogen clamp, and removes the foreskin very rapidly. His name is Dr, Neil Pollock and you can look up his site. I found his video very reassuring.
You have to realize that lots of Jews have their sons circumcised who are not terribly religious but they are like Catholics who have a baby baptized, at the same time not considering themselves believers. Both these rites have deep psychological meaning. We must not be bigots about such rites.
There is ample evidence in the medical literature that male circumcision has many benefits. That is why 70 percent of American are still circumcised.
I underwent circumcsion when I was a 26 year old medical student, with sufficient knowledge to know the upside and the downside. I have never regretted having a circumcision and I am convinced that it has enhanced my sexual pleasure. If you like your foreskin, I am sure no one wants to take away your right to keep it. You should not expect Jews to abandon this powerful ritual just because it makes you uncomfortable to think about it.
Please keep an open mind about this and don't fall prey to people on the internet who want to make you believe that circumcision is a bad thing. There is abundant evidence to the contrary. If you are over 18 you should check out some of the pro-circumcision groups before condemning the procedure or the Jews and Moslems who adhere to this ritual.Health Question & Answer

My husband is Jewish and circumcised. I am not Jewish, our son isn't circumcised.
My husband doesn't mind being circumcised, has no great view for or against.
I had not seriously thought about it, but I know we didn't even consider having our son snipped. Don't remember even discussing it.
Son is happy unsnipped.
Husband is happy snipped.
Cest la vie!Health Question & Answer

In the New testament as peter and Paul went along their missions, they realized that circumcision was no longer necessary. Whether a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or not, you can sit with your tribe or your fellow man. There are many laws in the Old Testament that no longer need to be followed. Jesus spoke of the new laws. They are in the New Testament. An uncircumcised man can be circumcised of the heart. Not physically, they mean spiritally.
You do not have to be circumcised.Health Question & Answer

Its just an ancient ritual required in Judaism. Muslims also have to be circumcised. I'm not a religious expert so can't answer you properly, but I do know that unless you have religious requirements then there is no need to be circumcised whatsoever, as long as you have good hygiene. The foreskin has many protective, sensory and sexual functions.Health Question & Answer

I know this does not answer the question, but I am very glad I was circumcised. I am not Jewish, at the time I was born most hospitals just did it automatically. Much less cleanup, and I doubt I lost any sensation. The idea of having to peel back a foreskin to wash is just too disgusting to think about.Health Question & Answer

It's a stupid tradition, mutilation of baby boys. It used to be just the few centimeters of the tip, which was bad enough, but after Dr. John Kellogg(in the 19th century)advocated radical removal of the entire foreskin to prevent masturbation it has become a much greater travesty perpetrated on helpless babies.

Oh good grief, you have no idea what you're talking about. First--it's the sign of the eternal covenant between G-d and the Jewish people. It's not up for debate.

I've also been to many circumcisions. The baby cries for maybe a minute and then that's it.

And I'm glad to hear that you like playing with yourself. Personally, I doubt it makes much difference.Health Question & Answer

I guess I will throw my 2 cents in on this one, so here goes.

The Bible (New Testament) says this;

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
The Apostle Paul also said that God made every part of the body as he wanted it. (1 Corinthians 12:18).

Furthermore; this nonsense of religion, the bible did not say anything about circumcising the penis, there was mention of circumcising the hearts of the people and that meant to cleanse their soul of evil and to follow the way of Jesus. The New Testament refers to circumcision and slavery in the same sentence, nowhere did circumcision and penis be mentioned together anywhere in the New Testament.

So get your facts straight.

Circumcision is Sexual Mutilation.

I am Christian faith by the way and PROUD of it..
