I have an earache but no ear infection, whats the problem?!

Question: I have an earache but no ear infection, whats the problem.?
I have this pain in mostly my left ear but also my right, and it's bearable but it hurts, and i went to the doctor and he said i had the cleaest ears he's ever seen. I have no ear infection. It could have went away because it hurt a lot more in december, but i still feel the pain sometimes and i feel this kind of vibration in there like a few seconds of my heart beat or something. What could be wrong with my ears.? By the way- i do listen to loud music daily.Health Question & Answer

Sounds like a bit of serous otitis. Basically it's a reactive fluid build up by the ear drum (which is essentially a specialized tendon - these react to irritation by secreting fluid). This can occur via infection (usually viral - if you had a recent cold or flu) so it won't necessarily be red and swollen with pus, or from repetitive trauma (loud music counts). Definitely stop the loud music (why risk your hearing any way if you want to hear music later in life). Sometimes a short course of an antihistamine can help open the ears and allow them to drain. Still, I'd suggest you see an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) especially since your symptoms are persistent.Health Question & Answer

It is very likely that you are damaging your ears by the loud music. I guess you should turn it down for a while and see if it goes away. In the meantime, heat can really help relieve ear pain. You can use a heating pad, a warm wet washcloth or even a hairdryer set on low. You can also take some Advil or Tylenol for the pain. If the vibrations and pain continue it would probably be a good idea to see an ear, nose and throat specialist to see if you have done any damage to your ears and to catch any problems before you do any more damage to them.Health Question & Answer

Eliminate the loud music; you may be experiencing the effects of damage to the hair cells in your inner ear. This may cause ringing, a sense of "stuffiness" in your ear and even the sound of your heartbeat. I don't know about pain, but I do know that you have to protect your hearing or you'll be going deaf in middle age.Health Question & Answer
