How bad is my sleep deprivation?!

Question: How bad is my sleep deprivation.?
i'm 15. on a typical night i get about 6-7 hours of sleep, minus the time it takes for me to try to get back to sleep after i wake up - which is at average 3 times a night, and about 30-60 minutes to get back to sleep (if i do.) from these facts, we can deduce that i get about 5-6 hours of sleep. however; i know that waking up in the middle of sleep is bad enough to make 6 hours of straight sleep better than 8 hours of sleep with 1 wake up. so mine is 5-6 hours of sleep and 3 wake ups ... what factors determine how bad my sleep deprivation is.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
That doesn't seem like much sleep for a teenager. Teenagers usually need 8 to 10 hours a day. You measure your sleep deprivation by how it affects your quality of life. Do you have trouble paying attention in class because you are having a hard time keeping your eyes open.? Do you lack energy during the day.? Do you find yourself reaching for food or coffee to keep you awake.? Even if you only sleep 4 hours a night, if you are awake and alert and happy all day, you are getting enough sleep. However, if you are not...you need more sleep.

Our sleep has specific cycles every night. REM sleep is the most important sleep we get. It is our deepest sleep cycle and, when we are in REM sleep, we dream. If you are waking up throughout the night, your REM cycles are being disturbed. Why do you wake up.? Are you cold or uncomfortable.? Do you have to go to the washroom.? Did you drink too much caffeine.? Are you being disturbed by noises or lights or something.? Try to solve those problems first- if you solve those problems then you solve your waking up problem (and your sleeping problem). For instance, I've taken to wearing a sleep mask. It seems to help me.

By the way, they have linked obesity to chronic sleep deprivation. When we are sleep deprived, we secrete a hormone that makes us hungry, so we eat more than we should. People with sleep deprivation often end up being overweight. Health Question & Answer
