Hit my head went to hospital & was refused scan!?!

Question: Hit my head went to hospital & was refused scan!.?
I hit my head really badly 2 days ago and 6hrs later developed severe headache and dizziness. I went to hospital and they just gave me paracetamol! and refused to give me a scan. The symptoms haven't gone and I know I wont relax until I know everything's ok. Do you reckon I should go back to hospital and insist on a scan.? I've even been considering going to a private hospital and paying, if I haven't got a health insurance, any idea of how much a scan would cost me.? Thanks.

If they don't think you need a scan, then you probably don't. 90% of diagnosis is based on symptoms and history, and scans are used to confirm the diagnosis rather than make it. If your symptoms don't fit with any particular pathology, and you don't have any symptoms or signs that seem dangerous, then you probably don't have anything seriously wrong.

I think CT and MRI scans cost a few thousand privately. They're not cheap, but you could get one quickly. But if you're worried, it might be a good idea to either go back to A&E or visit your GP as an urgent patient. They can reassure you as to when you will start to feel better, and can refer you on for a scan if necessary. However, if there was anything seriously wrong, I think it would be clear by now, since two days have gone by. It's likely that you've got a concussion, which will sort itself out soon.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon!Health Question & Answer

Hi there, I work in an emergency dept, and CT scans are certainly not routine, they cost a lot of money. We follow the department of health's NICE guidelines, and with the history you give it's very unlikely that you have a serious brain injury. If you lost consciousness at any time during the injury or after, was having persistent vomiting, confusion or a reduced conscious level then you would be whipped up to CT quickly. Dizziness and headaches are normal following any head injury, and I wouldn't pay thousands for a scan.Health Question & Answer

Defiantly go back to a hospital. Obviously panadol arent doing enough. Go to a different hospital, explain your symptoms, and that you were refused a scan at another hospital. Good Luck Health Question & Answer

yes go back to the hospital or even back to a different hospital if you can and try and make it seem like its really bad but not to bad so you get a scan. hope your ok though and i hope your head gets better soon.Health Question & Answer

Only you know how your body feels and it's irritating to have a Doctor tel you that you don't feel the way you feel. I would go back and tell them your symptoms one more time and insist on a scan. Health Question & Answer

I dont think it would cost that much to be honest, but why don't you go to the hospital again and try again for a test, explain how you were refused one earlier on in the week. X good luck xHealth Question & Answer

Scans do cost a lot of money and aren't readily done (under the NHS - are you in the UK.?). Have you told your GP about this.? His referral might move mountains here and it does sound as if you should be checked.Health Question & Answer
