What is the benefit in an EMG nerve test if you have an MRI dx already?!
Question: What is the benefit in an EMG nerve test if you have an MRI dx already.?
I had an MRI done and X Rays and it showed cervical spondylosis along with some disc damage in the same area. I have an injury thats 15 years old to the area. After my primary doc sent me to a different doc to go over the MRI results, the new Doc suggested I have an EMG nerve test done. From what I understand,it doesn't necessarily change the treatment I would get and is a painful procedure. Why would it be helpful to have it done.? The last thing I want is more pain at this point. Has anyone else had experience with this.? If so what do you suggest. I was first diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and when none of the medication from that was helpful my primary finally ordered an MRI to see about the neck problem I repeatedly told her about. I have a 15 year old injury and it has worsened over the years and after working at a very physically demanding job for 8 mos. I am now in constant pain. I'm a 42 year old woman who has always been otherwise healthy and now I am unable to work or do anything like I used to. I feel too young to be disabled this way, but just don't know how to deal with the pain. The doctors seem to be shuffling me around. I am not a difficult person or a whiner, I just need some relief from the constant pain I am in. Thank you in advance for your answers.Health Question & Answer

An EMG is often more helpful than an MRI. An MRI is a static picture. It looks at your bones, ligaments and disc's at one moment in time. An EMG is a dynamic test. It tells you how your nerves and muscles are actually working. You can have a nice looking discor nerve on MRI but still have pain. Only the EMG will tell you if that nerve is working propberly.
