Question: Have I broken my leg or not.?
3 weeks ago I hurt my leg rolling about, so we went to the doctors to get it looked at and they gave me crutches for a week and referred me to a consultant. He then said that it is an avulsion of the tibial tuberosity and that i should go to the fracture clinic the next day, so we went and they kept me on crutches for another for 2 weeks then come back. We went back the other day and they said that i will need crutches for another 4 weeks and that it is possible that it is chipped/broken so when I go back i might need an MRI scan and if it is broken then I will need and operation to put it right (put the chipped bit of bone back in the correct place).

reg X ray will tell if it's broken, at most a CT scan, But, in surgery they use a C arm xray machine, it just goes around/under the OR table. It's just as good as a reg xray only they can "go live" if they have to manipulate the bone. So, Are you saying they haven't xrayed it yet.? I 'd go to my veterinarian, I did once, Anyway, xrays really don't cost that much, they might need a few angles, but they do up the cost of films, Is this through your insurance company.? If it is, they stink and the docs, too. Try a sports medicine orthopedic clinic for a second opinion before surgery, I guess the main question is, what if you don't have it fixed, will it heal by itself or do you have alot of pain, now.? The docs will tell you that you might get arthritis in your joints, who doesn't.? I would have 1-2 xrays done,they can put them on a dvd to carry around with you. Either it's fixable or not. I'll bet the ligaments and muscles will keep it in place, the problem with fractures that aren't corrected is that down the road, they can be more difficult to fix, but any Ortho surgeon worth anything can fix it. I worked in trauma/ortho all the time... go to wikipedia site. I searched avulsion of bone on yahoo. I think that will clarify it for you. We haven't seen your medical records so how will we know if it's broken or not... Most of us wouldn't be able to understand them anyhow as we're not medically trained.Health Question & Answer

To be honest if a consultant can't tell you if it is broken without an MRI scan and he has had the privilege of seeing the leg, i hardly think anyone here can provide an accurate opinion.Health Question & Answer
