They will put you to sleep to do this. I am guessing but I would think it will take a hour or more. Walking at first will be slow to allow healing. Another guess would be within 4 - 6 weeks. Talk to your doctor and see what he says.Health Question & Answer
It depends on how bad your break is, and the location of the break. Sometimes, it DOES hurt where the plate is located, and after the bone is healed, the plate could be removed, but only if causing pain enough to render surgery again. You could be walking as early as 4 weeks, but with many plates, they don't want you to bear weight for at least 6 weeks, to give the bone time to heal, with the screws holding the bone together to the plate. If you put weight on it too soon, you could do irreparable damage, so make sure to follow the doctor's instructions. Lastly, I want you to know the pain will not immediately go away after surgery. Some live with the pain the rest of their lives, but it lessens to the point they can deal with it. I pray that isn't the case with you. Good luck!Health Question & Answer
