Don't sleep during the day or evening at all, no matter how tired you are. You need to get into a routine, of going to bed at the same time every night for a couple of weeks. If you don't sleep because you worry about stuff, then write down your worries on a piece of paper before bed, and put them to one side till the morning, there's nothing you can do about it overnight anyway.

You need to start with a wind down routine - no caffeine after early evening, no drinks at all an hour before bed. don't rush about the house tidying, cleaning etc, just sit down, relax with a book.

When it is bed time, don't do what my mother does - spends half an hour working herself up making drinks, locking, checking and rechecking the doors, making toast, deciding she won't be able to sleep, up and down the stairs about 20 times just in preparation for bed.

instead, Make sure all the doors are locked about an hour before bed. Don't eat, don't drink. At bed time, simply go upstairs and go to bed. Put some drops of lavender oil on you pillow (available from boots, holland & barrett, other health food shops) This will help clear your mind and relax you. If your head is in a whirl, try some distraction techniques - my dad once challenged me to design a supermarket layout in my head, as i was lying awake doing nothing. I got to aisle 2 before i fell asleep. Other ones i do is going through the alphabet coming up with 5 boys or girls names beginning with each letter.

No caffeine after 4pm, eat your evening meal early, have a nice warm bubble bath to help you relax, warm milky drink and off to bed you go. Relax in bed, lie on your back to begin with and concentrate on deep breathing (slowly), picture yourself on a desert island (or somewhere you would love to be). Then tense your toes and relax them, tense your calves and relax them, tense you knees and relax them. Do this all the way up to your face. If your not asleep by this time do the excersise again. i find that when i can't sleep (which is often) i have too much on my mind, try writing everything and anything down. Or you could try reading, or drawing basically anything that takes concentration. that usually frees up my mind so i can sleep. Health Question & Answer
