Did this girl have tourettes?!
Question: Did this girl have tourettes.?
today i went to the doctors surgery and as i was waiting this girl was making odd, sudden noises.
basically, not being cruel but just describing it how it is, she was making sounds about 3 or sometimes 4 times over, just like a donkey. it came out sort of like a cough and was very chesty. when i heard her speak to her mum her voice sounded quiet like she was losing it through the "noise" she was making and i heard her comment that it was annoying.
i felt really sorry for her because her "noises" were very loud, but i also wanted to know what exactly was causing this.
could this be tourettes.? or was it whooping cough.?
also, a general question, how do you behave when someone has these "noises" or maybe they are called ticks.? i really wanted to smile at her so she knew that i didn't care about her ticks but i thought she might find that patronising.
thanks in advance! xHealth Question & Answer

Answers:
It was likely Tourette's.
In infants, you get the traditional high pitched "whooping" sound with pertussis. In older children and adults, it usually sounds like a typical cough with a quick inhalation afterward (to "catch your breath").
What you have described sounds like the vocal tics that can be associated with Tourette's.
