How do I tell my therapist I have an eating disorder, at my first session?!

Question: How do I tell my therapist I have an eating disorder, at my first session.?
Wednesday, I have a psychotherapy session. Lately, I have been finding it very difficult to cope with my eating disorder. I just don't know what to tell her at my session, or how to tell her. I'm really struggling to go through with this appointment as well, because of the fear of not knowing what kinds of questions she might ask me once I do tell her. What could I expect to be asked.?Health Question & Answer

Congratulations on being proactive about your mental health.

Firstly, not only won't she, she is legally not allowed to tell your mother about your ED and cutting. If she's a good therapist, she won't judge you, and she'll ask you questions such as "Why did you want to come in" "what's your mood been like lately" - low key things like that. You'll probably feel like you won't know what to say, but therapists are trained in facilitating conversation. And if you don't mesh with her, find a different therapist - the bond between the therapist and client is so important.

The first session you typically talk about your current life, but you DON'T have to tell her then, you can wait until she gains your trust a bit more, or until you're simply more comfortable. I cut myself, and my therapist knows, my mom told her, though, and I was angry at her for telling someone I didn't know. She won't force anything out of you, and if she brings up something that makes you uncomfortable, tell her it's an awkward subject with you at the moment and you'd rather talk about it later. Just remember she won't push you to say anything, and you don't have to until you feel ready. Health Question & Answer

rest assured, they've heard it all, so don't be afraid to sound "strange" in telling them anything. just give them the information they need to know in order to help you. you're not there to impress them.

she won't talk to your mother about anything.

expect her to ask how long you've been doing these things, when/why you started, why you think you've been continuing... things like that. what you're life was like/has been like as these problems have been progressing.

don't be worried if you don't know the answers already- chances are you don't, that's why you're there. they know how to help you figure out the root cause of your problems and then how to help you work them out from there.Health Question & Answer

take in steps but don't rush because you might have a good therapist or not ready to trust the therapistHealth Question & Answer

Be honest and just say it. You're paying to get help, and you woun't get it until you tell the truth.Health Question & Answer

No I don't think she can talk to your mother unless your hurting your self to a extreme. I see my therapist 2x a week and she even put me in the hospital because my heart was failing. I just tell her strait out because you feel better and then you can get help. I know what your going through i used to cut when the eating fears got over welming and i couldn't get pills because I was 14 but now im 15 and i struggle every day it still takes me three hours to drink lemonade [12oz] but im improving dramatically all thanks to my therapist and her guidance..I would suggest if it gets out of hand go to a inpatient program they do wonders if you want to get better.
