It is so hard to know. With my Dad (lung cancer) they brought a bed in about a month before he died but he was walking and talking. He suddenly got ill on oct 14th and died oct 16th in 2000. The hospice nurse told us on the morning he passed that he seemed to have a week left in him. But they do not know. It is always a guess. Take this time to hold her hand and tell her how much you love her. Even if you think she doesn't understand. God Bless.Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately we can't predict time of death any better than we can predict the weather. We make estimates. To get hospice your doctor usually has to feel like there is less than a year left. Without water, she has just a few days. With water, but without food I would expect less than a month.

The benefit of a hospice nurse is that not only will she help to make sure your granny has the care she needs, but her specialty is in dying comfortably and naturally. also in helping you and the rest of the family deal with things and understand what to expect. Your hospice nurse will have the best estimate of time after she has had some time to work with your granny. Ask her questions!! That's why she's there.Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately, you can't put an exact time frame on this type of stuff.

In December it'll be three years that my dad passed away.

He had severe lung problems and was on oxygen since I was 1 year old.

Finally on my 15th birthday (nov. 8) he was checked into the hospital because he couldnt breathe at all because of fluid that built up in the lungs, and at thanksgiving they released him but told us he only had about 6 months more to live. and he ended up passing away a few weeks later on dec. 14. Hospice came around within the week before his passing. Same thing happened with my uncle a few months later because of stomach cancer.

I'm so sorry about your granny. I know what it's like to lose people close to you and not feel any hope. I don't know if that's how you feel but just hold in there.Health Question & Answer

Depending on your Granny's actual condition, it could only be a matter of weeks but definitely less than a year. Normally, in Hospice care the sick will only last for a few weeks, or even days. Health Question & Answer

there is no way to know for sure, especially with out during an assessment. It could be days or months...Health Question & Answer
