Question: Is it possible to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia if it does not run in your family.?
Answers:
Yes, it is. Especially if drug use is in the persons history.

You might check out these websites:

http://www.nami.org
http://www.schizophrenia.ca/files/Rays_o...
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/schizop...

They have a lot of very good information on schizophrenia. The first three websites have booklets in pdf format that you can download and save for future reference.

You might also check out www.healthcentral.com/schizophrenia it has a blog, forums, and question and answer sections. It is very informative.

There is also an excellent book, "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Manual for Families, Patients, and Providers" by E. Fuller Torrey, Fifth Edition. I know Barnes & Noble has it. That is very good reading and tells a lot about schizophrenia.Health Question & Answer

Yes. Schizophrenia isn't wholly genetic - if it runs in your family then you're more susceptible, but it can also be triggered by traumatic events or drug use (although far from everybody who suffers trauma or takes drugs becomes schizophrenic). And sometimes, it's just plain bad luck.

If you're having symptoms of schizophrenia, please see a doctor.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is possible. My step daughter developed it around 30 and there was no family history at any time to anyones knowledge.
It ruined her life and everyones life around her. I sure as hell hope it hasn't gotten to you or yours because it's completely devastating to a persons life as well as your family and friends.
If you or someone you know suspects it see a qualified psychiatrist ASAP. There are some very effective medications, but don't let it go to long. It's a progressive disease and only gets worse with time.Health Question & Answer

Yes. People are diagnosed on THEIR behaviour and symptoms. Family history is only used to get background information and a possible indication of what the causes of the individual in question's problems could be.Health Question & Answer

Yes. Anyone can have schizophrenia.Health Question & Answer
