Why do so many people hide behind a false self-diagnosis of ADHD or Tourette's?!

Question: Why do so many people hide behind a false self-diagnosis of ADHD or Tourette's.?
Or Bi-Polar or PTSD.? Or whatever the affliction of the week is.?

That's not to say that there aren't people who have a LEGITIMATE diagnosis. They truly deserve patience and compassion.

I'm talking about people who are lazy, selfish, irresponsible, abusive, unfaithful, and just obnoxious in general.

Forgot to pay your rent for 8 months in a row.? Cheated on your husband.? Haven't paid child support in 3 years.? Refuse to stop yapping and gossipping and creating unnecessary drama.? Then just say:

"I have (insert fake diagnosis here), so you can't hold me responsible."

Why is it that so many people play that "victim" card, and why do so many people let them get away with it.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Because, unfortunately, it often works. These afflictions have been used in court to excuse everything from failure to pay a bill to first degree murder. We need to go back to holding people responsible for their actions. I don't care if someone says the voices in his head told him to do it; he's still the one who did it.Health Question & Answer

I have bipolar disorder and don't consider myself a victim. I think the way you phrased that is a bit offensive. I also suspect that you don't know all that much about mental illnesses.

Yes, people shirk personal responsibility. They do it all the time with as many excuses as their are people and hours in the day. Using a mental illness I suspect isn't all that common. Knowing enough about one to diagnose is much less so. To self-diagnose is rediculous. Besides, having a mental illness only rarely is an excuse for actions and behaviors. Health Question & Answer

they do it because they know they can get away with it. But don't let it bother you too much. If a person lives like that, and many do, it will catch up with them eventually.Health Question & Answer
