Kind of an odd question..voices?!

Question: Kind of an odd question..voices.?
I was wondering whats considered hearing voices.

Is it multiple voices you dont know, like a split personality type thing.? Or your own voice, or voices you know.?

I hear and have conversations in my head all the time. I have since middle school. My boyfriend says its just me over analyzing things and thinking too much. But they arent 'thinking' conversations. I can be taking an order from a table at work, and the whole time there a complete conversation going on in my head in the background, about anything. Sometimes they are sexual based things, sometimes its stupid things like a TV show, or an argument.

Is that just me thinking too much, and over analyzing things, or am I just odd.?Health Question & Answer

In a multiple personality disorder, you would not be aware of another person living your life. In the case of schizophrenia (commonly mistaken for split personality) the person usually perceives things that aren't there and may have misguided paranoia. From the information you provided, my personal opinion is that you probably don't have either.

Some people are able to carry on conversations with themselves. They may consider it to be their own thoughts sorting themselves out. Others will label them as voices. As for conversations that you're not influencing or playing a part in, I'm not sure. Oftentimes, if I'm not working on something I find my mind wandering to ideas such as possible events or stories, but if I lose my focus it stops. It sounds as if your conversations continue regardless. It's good news if you can choose not to listen and focus on other tasks.

I do not think you're odd. If this is not interfering with your life, I wouldn't be too concerned. The brain is a complicated thing. :)

However, if it is making your life difficult (breaking your concentration, etc.) then you should see a psychiatrist or a psychologist for a proper diagnosis.Health Question & Answer

if u r talking back to these voices then it may be due to several hallucinagenic factors.. but if they r just voices or talking and conversation, its most likely just you in ur head going over things in ur head, or things u want to talk about or think about.

Everyone does it, and sometimes it's even pretty loud and you could swear the conversation actually happened before, but in reality, it was imaginary.

Its almost certainly not schizophrenia or a hallucination. Those types of voices are perceived to come from someone else. There is a very small possibility that it is related to dissociative identity disorder- folks with this report hearing conversations much like yours, sometimes for years. Most likely though, its simply you, thinking. -NebHealth Question & Answer

I type medical records for a psychiatric hospital. From what I have typed about, the majority of mental patients appear to hear "command" type voices, which are other voices/another voice in their head telling them to do something--hence the term "command auditory hallucination." I have also read in psychiatric books that the majority of these voices are male voices and if someone claims to be hearing a female voice in their head that they are usually faking it or have a wildly serious problem. Many mental patients do hear what they say are televisions talking to them and those sometimes are of a command type and sometimes not.

During a time of very high stress and depression in my life, I did hear a garbled yelling sound as I was trying to fall asleep nightly. It sounded like a man yelling over top of the sound of an ocean and no actual words could be sorted out. When I tried to focus on the sound it disappeared instantly. This didnt last long and I dont know if that is similar to what someone with real mental problems hears or not but it was there, so I do believe if you are hearing something like a tv show or arguement in the background that you may have a problem. From what I have typed about and read about in psychiatric books, puberty to approximately 21 or 22 years of age is the most common onset time for mental problems to surface. Stating that you have had this since middle school also leans toward indicating that you have a true problem, though maybe not of a "command" type (which is probably what you and most people think about first because that is what is protrayed on television shows). Real auditory hallucinations do not HAVE to be like on television where they make you go out and kill someone or something.

Even voices that are not of a command nature can be damaging. They could be damaging by causing you to get orders wrong at work, then snowball into job loss, homelessness and lots of other sad stories I type about. Your best bet is to tell a doctor and let the doctor determine what can be done or if these are auditory hallucinations at all or just a wandering mind. I dont think you are exaggerating or looking for attention just because what you describe doesnt match the "common television version" of the condition--a doctor will also know the difference.
