Answers:
Endogenous depression

* 'Endogenous' (occurs from within) implied there was no discernible cause for the depression.

* It was believed that this type of depression was more likely to be passed on to children due to a larger genetic component than reactive depression.

* This form of depression was thought to be characterised by a high proportion of biological symptoms (sleep and appetite disturbance, poor concentration and memory, loss of interest in sex).

* Some authorities thought this form of depression was most likely to respond to antidepressant treatments.Health Question & Answer

Endogenous - born with it, genetic, not the result of environmental influences. Such diagnoses is always a matter of some supposition. There's no physiological test for it or even for non-endogenous depression.

Worsening might be due to the limited sunlight of winter. Could try artificial sunlight therapy to raise the vitamin D levels among other things. Brown rice may be good for amino acid tryptophan (used to make brain serotonin among other things), vitamin D, & melatonin. Try having some every day.

There is evidence that antidepressants eventually even lower the serotonin levels after long term use so it is always useful to look for alternatives.Health Question & Answer

I've had that type of depression twice. The first time was 19 years ago (I was 30), I had a lovely husband, 2 gorgeous kids, my parents, a nice home, etc. I took PROPRANOLOL and PROTHIEDEN for 10 months, then was fine.

2nd time was 4 years ago. Still married to the same lovely man, kids grown up (23 and 20 then) but at home. Parents both dead (years before), nice home, good job with good pay. I took CITALOPRAM (20mg) for 3 1/2 years (stopped ealier this year) BUT THIS TIME, I carried on going to work (am a nurse) and kept up with friends, etc., even though I really didn't feel like it. TRY to find people to be with, other than medical people and anyone else with depression. You need to keep getting fresh air, exercise (even if it's only just walking to the shop) and daylight. All those things will help, but you must get OUT, otherwise you will retreat further into yourself, which will make you feel worse.

Good luckHealth Question & Answer

Yeah, I've been there. I don't know what the term means but I've been so low that the only thing that worked for me is the belief that nothing lasts forever (a bit of Buddhist philosophy)Health Question & Answer
