SCHOOLBOY, 13, DIES AS MEASLES
MAKES A COMEBACK

The Sunday Times (London) April 2 2006

Brian Deer

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy has become the first person in Britain for 14 years to die of measles in a sign that the disease, once a common killer, is resurfacing.

Many of the once almost eradicated childhood diseases had a mortality due to the rarer complications. Both the diseases and the risk of this were reducing even before immunisation came in due to general increases in fitness and a waning of disease potency.

However the statistics that predicted in advance that a reduction in immunisation would reduce 'herd immunity' levels proved correct. The diseases began to appear in epidemic once more. Lack of early exposure tends to mean that when they do strike, they can be both more severe and have a higher risk of complications.

Potentially fatal complications of measles include pneumonia, meningitis and encephalitis and a death rate of as many as 1 in 2,500 cases of infection!

Mumps complications include, orchitis or oophoritis ( inflammation of the testicles or ovaries,) which can produce sterility. also meningitis and encephalitis and pericarditis, all of which can be fatal.

Complications of Rubella include fits, pneumonia and encephalitis as well as the well known risks to the foetus in pregnant women who become infected.

Overall this of course reinforces the fact that the risks of the diseases always overwhelmed and small risks that the vaccines might pose.Health Question & Answer

And the sub-optimal uptake of the MMR vaccine is mainly due to over acceptance of ONE single, discredited piece of research claiming to link MMR to autism.

All 3 viruses covered by MMR can have a devastating impact. Measles kills, mumps causes male infertility and rubella causes terrible birth defects. Anyone considering refusing the MMR on behalf of their child should consider this. But maybe the NHS could meet such parents half way and offer them individual vaccines rather than the 3-in-1.Health Question & Answer

no measles has always been a killer, and those that don't get their children immunised are being reckless with their lives. I am amazed now how many parents are refusing to let their children have the inoculations. when i was a child it was compulsory.Health Question & Answer

I think you mean there were 61 infant deaths from measles between 2005 - 2008. The death rate a hundred years ago would have been much greater.

In the US, measles was a leading cause of childhood death until about 1950, and even until the development of the vaccine. My career in pediatrics began before the availability of the measles vaccine, and I can tell you from personal experience that practically all of the affected children I saw with measles were quite ill with high fevers and coughs. Secondary pneumonia was a common complication.

Most fatalities occur in children under age two, especially those whose parents are below the poverty line. Vitamin A deficiency may be a contributing factor in these children.Health Question & Answer
